Other Health Resources in our State
If you are NOT eligible for Medicaid, Medicare or NJ FamilyCare, but still need help meeting your medical needs and expenses, there are places in New Jersey to turn to for affordable health care.
Federally Funded Qualified Health Centers
Comprehensive community-based primary health care is available on a sliding fee scale at any one of the 19 Federally Funded/Qualified Health and Migrant Centers (FQHC) in the state. The FQHCs all target the health care needs of the medically underserved within their respective service areas. Typical services include internal medicine, obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics, geriatrics, medical and surgical sub-specialties, laboratory, podiatry, pharmacy, x-ray, dental, and mental health services. Care is provided at costs that are substantially lower than at other settings and are based on ability to pay. For a complete listing, click here.
Centers for Primary Health Care (CPHC)
New Jersey’s Centers for Primary Health Care (CPHC) offer a wide range of health care services for the entire family as well. You don’t need health insurance to get care at a center. Centers serve the uninsured and underinsured, as well as patients with Medicaid, Medicare and private insurance. If you’re uninsured, your bill will be based on your ability to pay. No one is ever turned away for lack of funds.

Independent Health Care Appeals Program Helps Citizens Denied Medical Coverage
The Independent Health Care Appeals Program (IHCAP), administered by the NJ Department of Banking and Insurance, is a review program used to assess whether or not a given insurance company has inappropriately denied medical coverage to patients. If an insurance carrier has denied coverage for a medically necessary treatment, the patient can submit an application for review through IHCAP to have the decision reviewed by a neutral party. Here are a few resources that may offer some solutions:
- Cancer Financial Assistance Coalition - Many organizations including the American Cancer Society and Cancer Care recently established this website www.cancerfac.org to provide a centralized streamlined way for patients in need of financial assistance. The Coalition does not provide direct financial assistance, but it does offer information about sources that may be available to assist you. Learn more.
- Managing the Costs of Cancer Care is a comprehensive booklet published by the American Society of Clinical Oncology. It is available in PDF format and online here.
- The National Cancer Institute has devoted a portion of its Web site to financial resources that may be able to assist you. Learn more.
