Response
2-1-1 and Local Government
**
It's Friday afternoon, ten minutes to 5 p.m. You are sitting across from a constituent
who has just walked into your office to report that she and her two children have
been locked out of their apartment due to 3 months of uncollected rent. The family
has no where to go, no credit cards and only $7 cash. They plan on sleeping in
the car unless they can find other shelter. Does this sound familiar?
This family's crisis and others just like it challenge individuals and families
every day. However, it is sometimes so hard, so frustrating, and so time consuming
to find answers that people just give up. The value of 2-1-1 is that it helps
government communicate, extend its reach, and do important things that it doesn't
have the resources or flexibility to do in-house.
For example, at the same time that 2-1-1 helps put people in touch with local
government and community resources, it can provide the Mayor and Council with
another method of hearing the needs and demands of residents. 2-1-1 can provide
real time data on requests, complaints and services which will allow elected
officials to better allocate resources and personnel. In the long term, the
data generated by 2-1-1 will make it possible for municipalities to extend
the impact of government with less cost.
Participation in the 2-1-1 system benefits
both municipal government and residents.

"Information made easy, that's our goal in Atlantic County. We are committed
to providing information and access to the full range of services offered
by county government. Whether it's a question of every day life or a time
of personal crisis - accurate information, conveyed in a timely and respectful
manner, means the difference between getting the help needed and feeling
lost and powerless. It's initiatives like 2-1-1 that make Atlantic County
such a great place to live, work, and visit."
