The Stanford Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP) offers a free, intensive, structured training program to help individuals treat and manage diabetes. Classes focus on management lifestyle behaviors and emotional management, and last for 2 1/2 hours, once per week, for six weeks.
Workshops are facilitated from a highly detailed manual by two trained leaders, one or both of whom are peer leaders with diabetes themselves. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants' confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives. Each participant in the workshop receives a copy of the companion book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions, 4th Edition, and an audio relaxation tape.
This program should not alter or conflict with existing programs or treatment. If the content of the workshop conflicts with instructions that participants have received elsewhere, they are advised to follow their physicians' orders and discuss discrepancies with the physician. For medical questions, participants are referred to their physicians or diabetes educators.Fees:
Spanish-speaking individuals with diabetes, and their families and caregivers, with a particular emphasis on Veterans.Application Instructions:
Please call to be added to a registration waiting list. Classes may take place at community sites located throughout South Jersey, once enough people have registered in the local area.
