Service Description:

Assists veterans and their dependents, residing in Bergen County, with information and assistance in obtaining earned entitlements from federal, state and local governments, as well as any available entitlements from the private sector. Daily activities include initiation of claims for VA benefits, requests for lost military separation papers, medal replacement and VA health care enrollment. The Division also provides job counseling and referral and transportation to VA medical facilities. Special programs include providing American flags to decorate the graves of veterans on Memorial Day, providing burial in a veteran's cemetery for indigent veterans, and the "Tracers" program. The Division also hosts group meetings known as "Veterans First", for formerly homeless veterans who are now housed and need assistance in transitioning into housing. The Division operates the Alfred J. Thomas Home for Veterans. The home was opened in 2003 to provide transitional housing, therapy and counseling for chronically homeless veterans.
