COVID-19 Housing Assistance Program

covid housing assistance flyerA new opportunity for housing assistance was announced on Friday, October 9. If you have suffered a financial hardship due to COVID-19 and have not been able to pay your rent or mortgage you may be eligible.

Don't be Left Out in the Cold

As New Jersey’s Home Energy Assistance Hotline since 2012, NJ 211 is very familiar with how different heating assistance programs work. This year the assistance offered through these programs seems more essential than ever. With more than 1.65 million New Jerseyans seeking unemployment benefits since the beginning of the public health emergency in March and others working at a reduced level, we are hearing from people who have never needed this kind of help before now. Often they don’t even know these programs exist; they just know that they need help.

“You can really feel the power of 211 at times like this,” executive director Melissa Acree exclaims. “We’ve heard from so many people who admit they just don't know what to do and they’ve been so grateful to receive the guidance that we have been able to provide.” Recently a caller contacted us because she didn’t know how she was going to feed her family now that she had lost her job. We were able to connect her with NJ Helps, an online screening tool that can be used to determine eligibility for existing programs that help with food, finances, housing, childcare and healthcare. We talked with her about SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and provided referrals to local pantries in her area. We also shared information about food drives that were taking place that weekend. But we didn’t stop there.

Even though she called with a request for assistance with food, we talked with her about the home energy assistance programs that are available. Knowing from experience that money saved in one portion of your family budget, can be used to help with another need. 

There are several home energy assistance programs available in our state that offer critical help to households with low to moderate incomes. If you, or someone you know, is struggling with the cost of heating your home, you can learn about these programs by visiting NJ 211’s utility assistance pages. There you will find links to applications and information as well as details about DCAid, a new online screening and application portal for utility assistance programs, rental assistance, homelessness and eviction protection.
