Families who are having trouble affording food or gifts this holiday season may find relief from local resources. When searching the NJ 2-1-1 Resource Database use the following search terms in the search bar at the top of this page: 

  • For holiday gift giving programs, use: holiday toys
  • For meals for the holidays use: Thanksgiving meals; Christmas meals; Christmas baskets; Thanksgiving baskets
  • To find out where to donate meals or toys: holiday donations

In addition to what is listed in our database, we have received information from local churches and other organizations who are hosting programs this year. Whether you are looking for assistance or searching for a good place to make a holiday donation, our Holiday Assistance Programs list at the bottom of this page is a great place to start. 

All locations followed by an asterisk (*) have been verified this year. Those that could not be reached by phone have a notation reflecting that we are awaiting confirmation. 

The Salvation Army

The Vernon United Methodist Church runs a monthly community dinner for anyone in the community. The Thanksgiving dinner will be the Wednesday before Thanksgiving (November 21, 2018 at 6:00pm).

The Salvation Army of Hackensack runs an Angel Tree Program for families in need of gifts during the holiday season.

Eligibility: Open to low-income residents of Bogota, Hackensack, Maywood, River Edge, South Hackensack, and Teaneck. In addition, children must be no older than age 12.

Application: Please call or send an e-mail to schedule an appointment for assistance. Applicants must provide an ID, proof of address, birth certificate(s) of children.

The Social Service Association of Ridgewood & Vicinity (SSA) is a direct provider of services for low income individuals and families in need of basic supplemental financial assistance and case management who reside in Glen Rock, Ho-Ho-Kus, Midland Park, Ridgewood, Waldwick, and Wyckoff. The agency provides assistance in the areas of:

 - Holiday programs including:
          * Thanksgiving baskets
          * Gifts for the December holidays

Connect Family Center offers a variety of programs throughout the holidays for individuals and families in need. Programs include:

The Adopt A Family Program matches volunteer sponsors with low-income families during the holiday season. Sponsors interact directly with families and have the option to continue correspondence with them throughout the year. All assistance is based upon the sponsor's participation and can include gifts, clothing, and other holiday needs.

The Neighborhood Center provides Thanksgiving basket for Camden residents in need.

Eligibility: Camden residents who reside in zip code 08103 and 08104. Must meet income guidelines. Availability is limited for the Thanksgiving basket program. Please call for more information.

Application: Interested applicants can sign up for Thanksgiving baskets by November, walk- in service. Must provide proof of address (current utility, lease, cable, or phone bill), proof of family size (insurance cards, report cards), and photo ID for all the adults

During the holiday season, the Salvation Army of Camden provides Thanksgiving food baskets and Christmas gifts assistance to community members in need.

Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets are available during the holiday season. All other items given are available, only by donation.

Eligibility: Low income families in need who reside in in East Camden.

Application: Families must bring a Medicaid card for each child in a household. Proof of address (water, electric, or rent bill), birth certificates, and photo ID with matching address are required. 

If the ID address does not match the service bill, applicants must bring in two forms of address (another service bill works).

The Salvation Army of Bridgeton assists families with Thanksgiving food baskets and holiday gifts for Christmas.

Eligibility: Open to individuals and families in need who reside in Bridgeton.

Application: Applicants can register for both programs beginning the last week of September, Mon - Thu 1:00pm - 3:00pm.  Last day to register is October 25th for Holiday Gifts and November 15th for Thanksgiving Baskets.   A state ID, proof of address, and birth certificates/passports of all dependents are required.


East Orange/ Orange Community Development Corporation

Maplewood Municipal Welfare

The Municipal Welfare Office distributes Thanksgiving baskets to individuals and families from Maplewood in need during the holidays. To apply, call and leave a message to speak with the Welfare Director to be added to the holiday list. Registration is ongoing and ends three weeks before Thanksgiving day.

The Salvation Army of Montclair runs a Christmas toy drive for residents of Cedar Grove, Glen Ridge, and Montclair who are in need and a Thanksgiving dinner for anyone in need in the community.

Eligibility: Open to all families in need who reside Cedar Grove, Glen Ridge, and Montclair.

Application: Registration is during the first weekend in December. Interested applicants must call or visit the office to register. Distribution occurs the week before Christmas.

Eligibility: Open to all individuals and families in Essex County.

Saint Vincent de Paul - Incarnation Church Conference

Holiday Gift Giving is a program that distributes food baskets and gifts to individuals and families in need living in Mantua and Wenonah for the holidays. The program covers the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter season.

Eligibility: Open to residents in need who reside in either Mantua and Wenonah ONLY.

Application: Applicants must call the church and ask to be connected to the Saint Vincent de Paul voicemail box. A member will return the call as soon as possible.

Holidays programs are on a first come, first served basis.

King's Things Food Pantry

During Thanksgiving and Christmas, the pantry offers holiday programs including:

 - A food voucher program for guests to buy the necessiteis for a Thanksgiving dinner
 - Full holiday meals (ham or turkey included) for families in the service area during Christmas

Open to residents in need from East Greenwich, Logan, South Harrison, Swedesboro, and Woolwich. 

For holiday assistance, current food pantry guests are prioritized for these services. Please call for more information.

Application: Please call before to make an appointment and receive a ticker number. Photo ID and proof of residentcy is required. If family size is over 5 members bring a lease or proof of household size. Intake application will begin in October. Deadline is November 14th.

Each family/individual must fill out the Holiday Hands Request Form. Any adult  or children over 18 years old should fill out their own form; more forms available at United Way. This application must be mailed or dropped off to UWHC by October 31st. Mailing address: UWHC, PO Box 2290, Flemington NJ 08822. Drop-off only address: UWHC volunteer Center 20 Fulper Rd., Flemington, NJ 08822. Forms received after the due date will be placed on a waitlist and may not receive gifts. Cannot guarantee that the items requested will be provided. Resources are limited.

Readington Area Starfish provides emergency food to Readington Township families in need only. The agency holds food distributions at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and the Fourth of July.

Please call the office to be screened for the Starfish program. Registration for holiday food baskets must be made at least 3 weeks in advance. Referrals may also be made through local churches.

Food and monetary donations are accepted.

Donations can be made through local churches, dropped off at the Municipal Building during business hours or mailed.

Please call for an appointment on all programs. Family must provide proof of income and must qualify based on poverty guidelines. Document needed: birth certificate. photo ID, proof of address, proof of income.

Eligibility: Most programs are offered to West Windsor residents, who are low income and 55 years of age or older. General Assistance (GA) is offered only to single adults and couples with no minor children.
