Once Foreclosure has Begun
The Community Health Law Project (CHLP) has limited funds that it is devoting to assist with a reverse mortgage, tax foreclosure or regular foreclosure. To be eligible for assistance, you must live in one of the following counties: Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cumberland, Essex, Gloucester, Mercer, Ocean, Salem or Union; and you must have an income that falls at or below 250% of the Federal Poverty Level. If you live in Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester, Ocean, or Salem counties, call the Camden office at 856-858-9500.
By dialing a toll-free number, 1-888-LSNJ-LAW (1-888-576-5529), callers can access a statewide legal hotline that provides legal information, advice, and referral to low-income residents of New Jersey with civil legal problems (criminal cases are referred).
This service is provided at no charge but applicants must be financially eligible to qualify. The hotline handles all cases over the telephone and does not provide ongoing legal representation. The hotline is open from Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:30 pm.
If you are having trouble getting through on the hotline due to call volume, you can fill out an online form and someone will get back to you as soon as possible. Inquiries are responded to in the order in which they are received. You may be able to find answers to your legal problems on their self-help website.
Lawyer Referral Services
The County Bar Associations located throughout New Jersey offer lawyer referral services to the public. Generally, these services will match you with a qualified lawyer who specializes in your area of legal need. They will conduct an initial assessment with you for a small fee. Most County Bar Association lawyer referral services are not free. Visit the NJ State Bar Association to find the for a list of County Bar Association in your county.
Tenants Rights are Protected in the Event of Foreclosure
Residential tenants in New Jersey cannot be evicted solely because the property where they live is in foreclosure or has been foreclosed.
